Piazza Maggiore, Bologna Italy

A grand and historical site to see
Often considered to be the heart of Bologna, Piazza Maggiore is a slice of Italy that visitors should not miss. Stately Gothic and Romanesque style buildings, a basilica, an art gallery, and magnificent fountain define this area of Bologna.
In fact, the fountain on the square, or the Fontana del Nettuno (Neptune fountain), is very symbolic of the Piazza Maggiore. It was designed by Giambologna between 1564 and 1566.
Also worth seeing here is the Palazzo del Commune (Town Hall), built in the 13th and 14th Centuries, and the church of San Petronio, one of Bologna’s most visited places of worship. Piazza Maggiore is a fascinating area to visit filled with great beauty and history.
