This 66-acre resort on the Samaná Peninsula looks straight out of the pages of European fashion magazines. A half-mile of white-sand beach with straw-roofed cabanas pulls back onto a complex of one- two- and three-bedroom villas spread out along the shore.
In each of the 40 rooms, designer Patricia Reid created an open, airy interior illuminated chiefly by sunlight. Tropical colors come in splashes on the upholstery and walls, while hand-carved, roble-wood furniture sits on a polished coral and granite tile floor.

Don't worry about picking up supplies before you arrive; the town's largest grocery store, Lido, delivers, and you can pay in U.S. or Dominican currency, or by credit card.
Be sure to try the ceviche and tiraditos at Porto, especially the spicy, Peruvian-stylechalaca with marinated fish, shrimp, and calamari, served with corn and sweet potatoes.
