Stroll down the Primorsky Boulevard and the Potemkin Steps used as the backdrop for a scene in the 1925 silent movie “Battleship Potemkin.” In Zaporozhye, visitors might see an impressive horsemanship demonstration presented by the Cossacks. The Tartar settlement knownas Bakhchisarai features the 16th century Khan Palace. While in Yalta, stops include the White Palace. Once used as a summer retreat by the Russian tsars, the location served as the meeting place for the 1945 Yalta Conference. United States President Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin all attended the important conference. While on the Crimean Peninsula, venture to the botanical gardens and the Imperial winery at Massandra.
The fourth longest river in Europe, the Dnieper extends 1,420 miles. The entrance begins at the turf swamps of the Valdia Hills in the middle of Russia. The river meanders southward through Russia, Belarius and into the Ukraine until exiting into the Black Sea. Seventy-one miles (115 km) of the river’s length forms the border between Belarus and the Ukraine. Branching out from the river are 20 main tributaries and numerous smaller tributaries. During the 5th century B.C., Greeks and Romans occupying the Ukraine at the time knew the Dnieper River as the Borysthenes. Beginning in medieval times, the banks of the river attracted various nomadic tribes who established settlements. Poles laid claim to the massive waterway but the Russian Empire gained control during the 18th century. The river serves the agricultural and fishing communities and acts as a transportation highway for people and products. While traveling along the river, evidence of green communities emerge. Many communities have constructed hydroelectric power plants along the shores.
